Therapy Modalities for Complex Trauma

Complex Trauma – What is it?

Complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) can result from experiencing chronic trauma, such as prolonged child abuse or domestic violence. It’s closely related to PTSD and borderline personality disorder. Chronic trauma results in stress responses including anxiety, flashbacks, heightened emotional responses (impulsivity/aggressiveness), and difficulties maintaining relationships.

Complex Trauma – Who does it affect?

While complex trauma can affect anyone, there are estimates from community studies suggesting women experience trauma at two to three times the rate that men do.

Dr. Shweta Kapoor, M.D., Ph.D., a Mayo Clinic psychiatrist with expertise in complex trauma notes:
“Complex trauma really disrupts a child’s life trajectory. It adversely impacts their self-image, their attachment styles, how they interact with the world around them, their relationships with others and their relationship with themselves,”…”When girls exposed to complex trauma grow up to be women, they may find themselves in abusive relationships. Unsurprisingly, these “layers and layers” of trauma have adverse emotional, mental and physical consequences.”
