Mindfulness-Based Therapy at Amend Treatment

Mindfulness-Based Therapy

Mindfulness-Based Therapy: A Powerful Tool for Mental Health Healing

Mindfulness-based therapy (MBT) is a category of therapeutic approaches that use mindfulness, defined as present-moment, nonjudgmental awareness, as a foundation for healing. Rather than focusing solely on symptom reduction, MBT helps individuals develop a different relationship with their thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations.

Different Types of Mindfulness-Based Therapy

Several structured therapeutic modalities use mindfulness as a core element. At Amend Treatment, we draw from these evidence-based approaches to support clients depending on their individual needs:

  • Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR): Developed by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, MBSR is an eight-week program that uses mindfulness meditation and gentle movement to reduce stress and improve well-being. Research has shown it to be effective in reducing symptoms of anxiety, depression, and chronic pain (Goyal et al., 2014).
  • Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT): Designed for individuals with recurring depression, MBCT combines mindfulness practices with elements of cognitive therapy to prevent relapse. A 2016 meta-analysis found MBCT to be as effective as antidepressants in reducing relapse risk.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): Originally developed for borderline personality disorder, DBT integrates mindfulness with emotional regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and distress tolerance skills. It is now widely used for a range of conditions, including trauma, addiction, and eating disorders.
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): ACT uses mindfulness and values-based living to help individuals accept internal experiences while committing to meaningful life actions.
  • Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC): This practice helps individuals develop greater kindness toward themselves in moments of struggle—a powerful counter to self-criticism and shame.

What Conditions Can Mindfulness-Based Therapy Treat?

While mindfulness is not a stand-alone treatment for every mental health condition, it has been shown to be particularly helpful when integrated into a broader therapeutic approach. Evidence supports its use in treating:

  • Depression and depressive relapse prevention
  • Generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), when used alongside trauma-focused therapies
  • Chronic stress and burnout, especially in high-pressure professions
  • Disordered eating and body image concerns
  • Emotional regulation challenges, such as those found in borderline personality disorder

Research shows mindfulness-based therapy leads to meaningful reductions in symptoms and improvements in quality of life.

How Amend Treatment Uses Mindfulness in Residential Care

At Amend, mindfulness isn’t just an occasional session, it’s woven into the rhythm of daily life in our residential program. Clients experience mindfulness as both a skill-building practice and a way of being that supports healing on every level.

  • Daily Practices: Guided meditation, mindful movement (such as yoga or walking), and breath work are integrated into the schedule.
  • Therapeutic Application: Mindfulness is incorporated into both individual and group therapy formats, sometimes alongside somatic work or DBT.
  • Real-Life Integration: Clients learn how to apply mindfulness in real time: during difficult conversations, moments of emotional overwhelm, or when facing triggering thoughts.
  • Sustainable Healing: We teach mindfulness as a life skill Clients can continue to use long after they leave residential care.

Mindfulness isn’t about escaping pain, it’s about building the tools to face life with clarity, calm, and compassion. At Amend Treatment, we offer the structure, expertise, and support you need to make that transformation possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is mindfulness-based therapy right for everyone?

Mindfulness can be helpful for many people, but it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. At Amend, we assess each Client’s needs and tailor their treatment accordingly, sometimes blending mindfulness with other therapeutic approaches.

Can mindfulness worsen symptoms for some people?

In rare cases, individuals with severe trauma histories may find some mindfulness practices triggering. That’s why all mindfulness-based therapies at Amend are offered in a trauma-sensitive, clinician-guided format.

Do I need prior experience with meditation?

Not at all. Most of our Clients begin their mindfulness journey with no prior experience. Our team is here to guide you with care and clarity every step of the way.
