Overview

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that is characterized by extreme mood swings. These mood swings can range from mania, when a person feels extremely happy, excited, and energized to depression, where the sufferer feels hopelessness, sadness, and emptiness.

When you are diagnosed with bipolar disorder there are many things that you will need to keep in mind to live your life successfully.

Bipolar disorder affects an estimated 2.8% of U.S. adults and is more prevalent in men than women. It is important to understand the mania symptoms so that you can recognize mania in yourself or others and stay healthy.

Symptoms

The symptoms of bipolar disorder will vary from person to person depending on the individual and type of bipolar disorder experienced. However, most symptoms of bipolar disorder can be categorized into two groups – mania and depression.

Mania

Mania is generally characterized by euphoria and a distinct increase in energy. The mania phase generally lasts as long as the individual has the extra energy to sustain it. It is during this mania phase that an individual can be at risk for making poor decisions without regard to consequences, such as excessive spending or sexual activity.

Depression

The depression phase is often characterized by feelings of hopelessness and sadness that can lead to thoughts of suicide. It is not uncommon for an individual with bipolar disorder to experience both mania and depression at the same time. These phases can last for varying amounts of time, depending on the individual case.

Causes

While scientists have not discovered a single cause of bipolar disorder, there are many factors thought to be involved. These can include:

  • Genetic – Individuals with a first-degree relative who has bipolar disorder may be more likely to experience the condition themselves.
  • Environmental – Stressful or traumatic events can trigger mania in those who are genetically predisposed to bipolar disorder.

Diagnosis

In order to diagnose bipolar disorder, a mental health professional will conduct a thorough interview to determine whether the mania and depressive symptoms are interfering with daily function. If so, the individual may be diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

To be diagnosed with bipolar disorder, an individual must experience mania and depression simultaneously, or manic episodes that last for at least one week. Untreated mania phases can last weeks to months.

It is important to note that bipolar disorder treatment varies depending on the severity of symptoms, as well as the length of time the mania phase lasts.

Types

There are several types of bipolar disorder, including bipolar I, bipolar II, bipolar III, bipolar IV disorder, Cyclothymic disorder, and bipolar NOS (not otherwise specified).

Bipolar I Disorder

Bipolar disorder I is the most severe form of bipolar disorder. Those with bipolar I experience manic episodes that last for at least seven days or even longer in some instances, as well as depressive episodes.

Bipolar II Disorder

Bipolar disorder II is best known as bipolar depression because those who suffer from bipolar II experience more depressive episodes than manic ones. However, bipolar I disorder can also present as bipolar depression or mixed state.

Bipolar III Disorder

Bipolar disorder III is characterized by rapid cycling bipolar disorder.

Bipolar IV Disorder

Bipolar disorder IV is characterized by a bipolar disorder that exists with another mental illness such as schizophrenia or schizoaffective bipolar depression.

Cyclothymic Disorder or Cyclothymia

Cyclothymic Disorder is a bipolar disorder without the full bipolar I or bipolar II symptoms. This type of bipolar disorder is best characterized by a chronically unstable mood state in which people experience hypomania and mild depression for at least two years. People with cyclothymia may have brief periods of normal mood, but these periods last less than eight weeks.

Bipolar Disorder NOS (not otherwise specified)

Bipolar disorder NOS is when a person does not meet the criteria for bipolar I, II or cyclothymia but has still experienced periods of clinically significant abnormal mood elevation. This type of bipolar disorder can involve predominantly depressive episodes.

Treatment

There are several approaches to bipolar disorder treatment. The most common treatments involve some sort of psychotherapy and medications. Therapy helps patients learn how to cope with stress, relate effectively with others and deal more effectively with manias and depressive phases.

There are three primary types of bipolar disorder therapies: cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), interpersonal and social rhythm therapy (IPSRT) and family-focused therapy (FFT). CBT helps individuals identify and replace negative thoughts with more positive ones. FFT helps patients develop relationships and deal more effectively with mania, while IPSRT focuses on establishing regular sleeping and eating patterns. Unfortunately, there is no medication available for mania or bipolar depression at this time.

However, there are several medications that can help treat bipolar disorder symptoms. These include mood stabilizers, antipsychotics and antidepressants. Mood stabilizers are the first-line treatment for bipolar mania or bipolar depression. Antipsychotic medications help balance out mania, while antidepressants can help balance out depression.

However, there are several potential negative side effects associated with bipolar disorder medication use, including weight gain and mania induction. Other side effects may include irritability, slowed motor function, impaired memory and suicidal thoughts.

It is important for bipolar disorder sufferers to work closely with their doctor when beginning a medication regimen so that the dosage can be adjusted as needed and side effects can be minimized or eliminated entirely. Bipolar disorder treatment length varies depending on the severity of mania and depression, as well as the effectiveness of medications.

For those with bipolar I, treatment may continue for as long as one to two years or even longer if mania reoccurs. However, those who have bipolar II typically only require treatment for a brief period of time. Bipolar disorder NOS usually does not require treatment unless mania or depression reoccurs.

Bipolar disorder is a challenging but treatable condition that can be managed with the help of medication and therapy. If you are experiencing symptoms, it is important to work closely with your doctor to find the best course of action for your needs.
