Mental Health Treatment Options

Defining Mental Health Treatment Options

What is mental health “level of care” and how do I know which level is right for me?

“Level of care” refers to the range of mental wellness services available that vary based on frequency, duration, and location. The Anxiety & Depression Association of America describes five different levels of care. These include:

  • Outpatient Therapy: The least intensive option, outpatient therapy involves weekly 45-50 minute sessions for therapy and medication management, suitable for those needing minimal support.
  • Intensive Outpatient Therapy (IOP): IOP provides structured therapy for 3 hours a day, 3-5 days a week, allowing flexibility for work or school while supporting ongoing recovery over 8-12 weeks.
  • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): PHP provides intensive therapy and medication management several days a week for 6-8 hours, supporting patients as they transition from residential care without requiring an overnight stay.
  • Residential Treatment: Residential programs offer 24/7 monitored, community-like environments for long-term recovery, typically lasting 30-90 days. Patients receive therapy while building interpersonal skills before returning home.
  • Inpatient Hospitalization: Inpatient care is for individuals in crisis, offering 24-hour monitoring in a secure setting to ensure safety and stabilization, with stays typically lasting 3-7 days.

A specialist can help you evaluate the pros and cons of each option based on your unique needs, preferences, and functioning level. If you have a strong support system at home and need to balance treatment with work or school, partial hospitalization may be the better fit. On the other hand, if you experience severe symptoms and require a structured, supportive environment, residential treatment may be more suitable.
